U.S. Rep. Brett Guthrie told this story about attending President Barack Obama’s inauguration during last Saturday’s Farm/City Breakfast at Apollo High School.
“The inauguration was special to a lot of people — an African-American family moving into the White House,” Guthrie said. “One of the special treats I had was an 82-year-old lady named Thelma Baker called me and said, ‘I want to go to the inauguration.’
“I said, ‘Two million people are going to be there. It’ll be crowded. It’ll be hard.’ And she said, ‘I drank from a ‘colored only’ water fountain over half my life, and I’m going to be there.’
“I thought, we’re going to figure out a way to get her there. And then it turned out that a few days before the inauguration, I found out my wife wasn’t able to make it, so I had a spouse pass to use.
“It’s really valuable, but you can’t sell it or anything. unless, I guess, you’re the governor of Illinois. I called Mrs. Baker and took her.
“As we were walking in, I told her, ‘You’re going to have to tell them you’re my wife,’ and she’s quick-witted and she said, ‘OK, I’ll be your wife today, but not tonight.’”
