Viagra-like pill for women being considered

Since Viagra met blockbuster success in 1998, the drug industry has sought a similar pill for women.

Now, a German drug giant says it has stumbled upon such a pill and is trying to persuade the Food and Drug Administration that its drug can help restore a depressed female sex drive, according to a story in the New York Times.

The effort has set off a debate over what constitutes a normal range of sexual desire among women, with critics saying the company is trying to turn a low libido into a medical pathology.

On Wednesday, an FDA staff report recommended against approving the drug, saying the maker, Boehringer Ingelheim, had not made its case, and that the benefits of the daily pill did not outweigh its side effects, which included dizziness, nausea and fatigue.

Some analysts forecast that if the drug does reach the market, it could have annual sales in this country of $2 billion — or about equal to the current combined annual American sales of the men’s drugs Viagra, Levitra and Cialis.

FDA warns Pfizer about reporting side effects

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued a warning to drugmaker Pfizer for failing to quickly report serious and unexpected potential side effects from its drugs, according to a Reuters news service report.

In a 12-page warning letter, the FDA cited examples involving some of the company’s best-selling brands, including the impotence drug Viagra, the cholesterol lowering pill Lipitor, and the seizure medicine Lyrica.

According to a Reuters news service report, “… while Viagra and similar medications are known to cause serious visual problems, including blindness, Pfizer failed to report cases related to its drug within the agency’s 15-day deadline ‘by misclassifying and/or downgrading reports to non-serious without reasonable justification.’”
